Artificial Insemination Pregnancy
How does Artificial Insemination Work?
Some people may have heard the term in vitro fertilization (IVF) and may think it means the same thing as “artificial insemination,” or might think that there is just one overall procedure called “artificial insemination” as a way to help couples get pregnant. The truth is, there are a few different procedures and treatments that fall into the category that most people think of when they hear “artificial insemination.” So how does artificial insemination work?
“Artificial Insemination” is the name of a procedure where sperm is taken from a male donor and implanted inside the female in hopes of fertilization. Artificial insemination as a procedure is also called “Intro-Uterine Insemination” (IUI) because the insemination (and hopeful fertilization) will happen inside the woman’s uterus.
“In vitro fertilization” (or IVF) is a similar but different procedure from artificial insemination. With in vitro fertilization, the sperm is taken from the male and used to fertilize an egg outside of the body in a lab setting. The fertilized egg is then implanted into the body in hopes of a viable pregnancy.
A viable pregnancy is the goal of both IUI and IVF procedures.
Artificial insemination is usually performed in conjunction with medications that stimulate the ovaries, and is often used to treat unexpected or unexplained infertility or low sperm counts.
Oregon Reproductive Medicine is proud that our pregnancy success rates for artificial insemination are high, making this advanced procedure a good choice for many couples.
If patients do not experience immediate success, multiple cycles are common and lead to a national artificial insemination success rate that can approach 85% in many circumstances.
