These treatments can address congenital or acquired problems in the pelvis such as scarring from endometriosis. The goal of these treatments is to restore the anatomy to a functional level so that alternative reproductive therapy (ART) may be utilized to restore fertility.
Surgical procedures include:
Hysteroscopy
A tiny camera is inserted into the uterus to provide the physician with more information that can be used in the assessment of the uterine lining.
Laparoscopy
This procedure helps assess and treat tubal disease. A small camera is inserted through a small incision in the belly button and into the pelvis. The physician can inspect the pelvic organs and look scar tissue and cysts. Problem areas can be treated at the same time.
Laparotomy
Not commonly used in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility, laparotomy is indicated for repair of the fallopian tubes after tubal ligation and for removal of uterine fibroids. Most tubal blockage can be treated laparoscopically however.
