Ways To Increase Fertility
When a couple decides they want to conceive, they often explore ways to increase fertility. To raise the chances of a viable pregnancy, both men and women can increase fertility in several ways:
Quit Smoking –
In addition to the myriad risks smoking poses to general health, it also relates to lowering fertility. Smoking affects how receptive the uterus is to egg implantation, and raises the risks of miscarriage significantly. In men, smoking can reduce healthy sperm production as well as damage DNA.
Watch What You Drink –
Both alcohol and caffeine affect a person’s fertility. To increase fertility and the chances of a viable pregnancy, it is advised to restrict or cut out completely beverages with caffeine or alcohol.
Diet and Exercise –
One key to increasing fertility in both men and women is moderation in diet and excercise. Eating or exercising too much or too little puts your body under stress, which can affect its fertility. By eating a balanced diet and getting the recommended amount of exercise, men and women can increase their chances at getting pregnant. Obesity is a significant factor in both male and female infertility.
Ovulation and Regular Intercourse –
Typically ovulation occurs about 14 days before the menstrual cycle. While tracking ovulation is an important step in increasing the chances of becoming pregnant, having regular sexual intercourse even while not ovulating raises the chance of pregnancy. Not having intercourse for more than 5 days may affect sperm count, and ovulation cycles may be unpredictable, so increasing sexual activity is a safe and easy way to increase the chances of pregnancy.
Fertility Treatments –
If a couple tries for a significant period of time without resulting in a pregnancy, a couple may be tested for infertility. Some of the observations may include:
Interviews that cover health and reproductive history
Tests of the uterus, including a saline infusion sonogram
Tests of the fallopian tubes, including a hysterosalpingogram
Tests of the ovaries
Tests of the cervix
After a full assessment, fertility specialists will determine your options for increasing fertility and a couple’s chances of conceiving. Treatments may include:
Oral Medications or Injectable Medication – Stimulates ovulation through the release of gonadotropins from the pituitary gland. Often accompany other treatment.
IUI (Intra Uterine Insemination) – Sperm is washed and introduced directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation.
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) – Utilizes assisted reproductive technology to fertilize a woman’s eggs outside her body.
Egg or Semen Donation
Egg or semen donations allow an embryo to be created with either male or female factor infertility, or both.
